Sweet potato chaat, also known as “Shakarkandi Chaat” is a flavorful and healthy Indian street food snack made with roasted or boiled sweet potatoes, spices, chutneys and garnishes. This chaat recipe is a delightful mix of sweet, spicy and tangy flavors.

The original version of sweet potato chaat is a popular North Indian street food, especially enjoyed during the winter months. The vendors roast sweet potatoes directly over charcoal, peel, cut and then toss them with spices, lemon juice and garnish with coriander leaves.

The original version of this chaat recipe is naturally vegan, gluten free and can be customized with various garnishes or chutneys based on taste prefrences.

How to make Sweet Potato Chaat :-

Boil 2 sweet potatoes. Once it is done let it cool down.

Peel the sweet potatoes. Using a knife cut them into cubes.

In a pan heat 1.5 tbsp ghee over medium heat. Add ¼ tsp red chili powder, salt to taste and stir well.

Add sweet potato cubes and roast until turns slightly golden brown and crisp on both sides.

Place the roasted sweet potato in a plate.

Add whisked curd, tamarind chutney, green chutney, roasted peanut, roasted cumin powder, green chili, chaat masala, lime juice, sev.

Top it with pomegranate seeds, onion, fresh coriander leaves and serve immediately.

Enjoy sweet potato chaat.

Tips :-

Make sure that the boiled sweet potatoes should stay firm and not get mushy.

As sweet potato is already sweet, do not add any sugar to curd. Just whisk curd with a little salt.

For oven roasted sweet potatoes – wash, peel and cut sweet potatoes into cubes. In a bowl add oil/ghee, red chili powder, sweet potato cubes and mix everything well. Preheat and bake at 400 °F for 25-30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 Sweet Potatoes (300 gm)

  • 1.5 Tbsp Ghee/Oil

  • ¼ Tsp Red Chili Powder

  • Salt to taste

  • 1 Green chili (finely chopped)

  • ¼ cup Curd/Yogurt (whisked)

  • 2 Tbsp Green Chutney

  • 2 Tbsp Tamarind Chutney

  • 1 tbsp Roasted Peanut

  • 1/8 Tsp Chaat Masala

  • 1/8 Tsp Roasted Cumin Powder

  • 2 Tbsp Coriander Leaves/Cilantro

  • 1 small Onion (finely chopped)

  • 3 Tbsp Fine Sev

  • 2 Tbsp Pomegranate Seeds

  • Lime Juice
