Mango dal is also known as Mamidikaya pappu in Telugu cuisine. This traditional Andhra dish is made with raw mangoes, lentils, spices and curry leaves.
In Telugu language, ‘Mamidikaya’ means mango and ‘Pappu’ means dal. Thus, this Andhra special dal is called Mamidikaya Pappu.
Growing up in Gujarat I had never eaten this dal recipe. I came to know about this dal recipe in US. I tasted it for the first time at our South Indian (Andhra) friend’s home and I really like it. Now I like to make this dal during mango season.
Here I am sharing easy mango dal recipe with step-by-step instructions and video. This delicious dal is best paired with steamed rice, a dollop of ghee and roasted papad.

Ingredients for Mango dal :-

How to make Mango Dal :-
1. Take toor dal in a bowl, rinse it well and soak for 20 minutes.
2. Once the soaking time is done drain off the water and add dal to a pressure cooker along with salt, oil and water.
3. Close the lid and pressure cook the dal over medium heat for 5 whistles or until the dal cooked very well.
4. Once the pressure releases completely, open the lid and mash the dal slightly. Keep it aside.
5. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Once hot add mustard seeds and let it crackle. Add cumin seeds, dry red chili, curry leaves, hing/asafoetida and saute for about a minute.
6. Add garlic, ginger, green chili and saute until garlic turns light golden.
7. Add onion and cook over medium heat till the onion turns translucent.
8. Add raw mango, Kashmiri chili powder, turmeric and saute for 2 minutes. Add hot water, cover the pan and cook until mango turns soft.
9. Add boiled dal, salt, hot water and mix everything well. Cover the pan and cook until comes to a boil.
10. Garnish with coriander leaves.
11. Serve hot with steamed rice.
Notes :-
Adjust spices as per your taste.
Make sure to soak dal for 20 minutes before cooking.

- For Pressure cook dal :-
1/2 cup Toor Dal
1.5 cup Water
1/4 Tsp Salt
1 Tbsp Oil
- For Tadka :-
2 Tbsp Oil
1/8 Tsp Mustard Seeds
1/8 Tsp Cumin Seeds
3 Dry Red Chili
Few Curry Leaves
Hing/Asafoetida a pinch
5 cloves Garlic (chopped)
1 inch Ginger (grated)
2 Green chili (chopped)
1 small Onion (sliced/chopped)
1/2 cup Raw Mango cubes (peeled)
1/2 Tsp Kashmiri Chili Powder
1/4 Tsp Turmeric Powder
Salt to Taste
Hot Water as required
Coriander Leaves (chopped)
